Major Arcana

II: The High Priestess

Summoned from flame, the High Priestess looks simultaneously directly into your eyes and around you into nothingness, the subconscious and conscious combined. Her red beard is abundance and fertility, and her turban hides the secrets of the Moon’s influence upon the Earth and its creatures.

The High Priestess guards the Temple of Solomon, home to your inner mysteries; in a doorway at either side of the temple hide the letters J and B, Jachin Boaz. They will establish. In them is strength. Does this refer to you, or some higher power?

Upright

  • Sacred knowledge
  • Subconscious
  • Femininity

The High Priestess tells you to look within. Perhaps some hidden part of you is shortly to appear, perhaps psychic powers will flourish like a Damask Rose in the mountains. Do not question her timing; The High Priestess reveals her secrets when she is ready.

For a lover of women, The High Priestess may be the perfect companion rendered unreachable by circumstance, unable to be captured or controlled. For a lover of men, she may be the divine feminine in your heart, a mystery your lover will never understand.

Inverted

  • Secrecy
  • Silence
  • Disconnection

A perfect reflection of the Moon on water does not always signify stillness. Unknown to you, stories are unfolding below the surface. Inverted, The High Priestess warns you that now is not the time to take action.

Perhaps you have ignored your heart; perhaps you are swept along on a tide of the problems of others, or enemies are working against you. Be silent; look inside your heart or the hearts of others, and eventually the mysteries within will reveal themselves.
