Major Arcana

XII: The Hanging Man

Neptune, the planet of sacrifice, rises above you. The beatific gaze of The Hanging Man illuminates a forest clearing. Like Odin, he hangs for nine days and nights, surrendering earthly knowledge in exchange for spiritual ecstasy. He gives his life willingly, for only through rebirth and regeneration can the human mind become truly free of self-doubt and paralysis.

The disembodied hands of woodland witches pierce The Hanging Man’s ears, nostrils and eye sockets. These are not tortures; these are the woodland Sirsasana, redirecting the brain’s energy to achieve true insight.

Upright

  • Involuntary pause
  • Letting go
  • Mourning

Forward motion is impossible. Trade progress for what tranquility you may find in stillness, while you await the decisions of others. Do not attempt to force these decisions, and when the time comes, do not be afraid to sacrifice secure mundanity in favour of new energy.

The Hanging Man may herald the departure of a cherished fellow traveller, a sacrifice made on your behalf. Mourning is necessary, but upon your emergence the stars will work alongside you.

Inverted

  • Selfishness
  • Oppression
  • Sacrifice

Your eagerness for progress creates risks for you and others. Events are a turbid river threatening to sweep you away if you attempt to cross, and selfishness or materialism may seem to provide your only salvation.

Deliberately or not, you are a tool of oppression. Stop. Remember your time in the dank forest cave of the Hermit and consider your path.
