Major Arcana

X: Wheel of Fortune

Outside the city walls you find a wild man hunched over his Wheel of Fortune. The endless cycle of death and rebirth, time and fate, a celestial glow the wild man catches in his wizened palms. He is Jupiter, the Luck Bringer, dispensing surprises as he bestrides the cosmos. The unpronounceable name of the Lord, YHVH, adorns his feathered headdress.

Four bats hover above the Wheel of Fortune, one for each of the ancient festivals of Imbolc, Beltane, Lugnasad and Samhain. For the Earth, too, is on a journey, from birth to its departure into the underworld.

Upright

  • Change
  • Fate
  • Positive confusion

Destiny and intent are snakes twisting around the branches of your life. The Wheel of Fortune indicates a new phase of benevolent chaos, a time when the winds of fate sweep away the leaves of your decisions.

Confusion is a challenge to be accepted. As the Wheel of Fortune spins, new potential arrives.

Inverted

  • Bad luck
  • Unexpected delay
  • Unwelcome change

Cosmic forces conspire against you, and bad luck stalks your path like a hungry wolf. Fate whispers inexorable truths that cloud your judgement and impede your progress. Avoid new ventures; for now, the Universe will not protect you.

But, like the great spray of stars that brightens even the longest night, the Wheel of Fortune keeps spinning. Even unwelcome change is an opportunity for growth.
